CONVENTION PRESENTATIONS AND PRESENTERS*

Following are descriptions of the educational seminars that will be presented at the convention.

Persian Rugs as an Expression of Culture
Barry O'Connell, Consultant

More than just mere floor coverings to walk upon or clean, Persian rugs are an expression of the peoples of Iran. Through the rugs we can examine the various people who over the last 2500 years came together to create what we now know as the Persian people. Inversely, by looking at those people we can come to understand the rugs. Rather than other systems of attribution used in the past, this will be shown on a Linguistic Basis with rugs presented as non-verbal language.

Thermal Treatments: Benefits and Misconceptions
Ralph E. Moon, Ph.D., HAS Engineers & Scientists

Thermal treatments offer a rapid and effective opportunity to dry and sanitize water damaged structures. This presentation will discuss the working principles required to use this sanitizing technique followed by project histories that will help you to decide whether or not this remediation technique should be included among your restoration skills.

Healthy School Environments
Bob Axelrad, U.S. EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency has developed a unique software tool to assist school districts in evaluating and managing key environmental, safety and health issues in the school facilities. The new Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool (HealthySEAT) is designed to be customized and used by district-level staff to conduct voluntary self-assessments of their schools and other facilities to track and manage information on environmental conditions school by school. The EPA has included critical elements of all its regulatory and voluntary programs for schools, as well as web links to more detailed information.

ASCR's Restoration Council has been tackling several major issues over the past year. This is your opportunity to get an update to what's going on in the areas of standardized contracts, hear about ASCR's involvement with cleanup efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, find out about the new courses ASCR is planning, view the newly redesigned certification ad for Claims magazine, participate in the approval of the bylaws for the Restoration Council, and learn about the next chapter of the overhead and profit discussion.

Rugs & Production from India
Dr. Douglas Lay, The Persian Carpet

Handmade rugs utilize a variety of weaving and dyeing techniques depending on their country of origin. This presentation will focus on rugs produced in India, featuring slides from recent trips, updates on rug production, how to identify rugs from India, as well as their care and cleaning.

Infrared Technology — Panel
Moderator — Larry Holder, CR, Belfor
Dick Price, FLIR

Attendees will learn how do determine if false readings are related to water or air filtration, and look at a variety of case studies involving this unique technology.

Indoor Environmental Cleaning & Management in Homes of the Immunocompromised
Eugene C. Cole, DrPH, Brigham Young University

Hospitals understand the importance of maintaining a sterile environment for the immunocompromised, but what happens when a patient leaves their facilities and returns home? Cleaning and restoration professionals will become aware of practices and techniques for home assessment and critical cleaning that should be used for convalescing patients who are particularly susceptible to opportunistic microorganisms in their environments.

Susceptible Occupants
Carl E. Grimes, Healthy Habitats, LLC

Performing beyond your standard operating procedure isn't worth it for most occupants. But to prevent doing harm, it's important to recognize the threshold for when it does become worthwhile.

Drying Technologies & Options for the Restorer
Moderator — Ron Bankhead, CR, First Restoration Services
Chuck DeWald, Jr., Chuck DeWald's Structure Drying School
Patrick J. Moffett, CHMM, REA, WRT, AMRT, Environmental Management & Engineering, Inc.

Each of these options are tools every restoration contractor should be familiar with and know when to use for maximum efficiency.

Environmental Laws and Regulations: What You Don't Know WILL Hurt You
David M. Governo, J.D., Governo Law Firm LLC

There are many issues that environmental contractors need to stay up to speed on, such as: lead-safe repairs; laws, regulations and standards related to indoor air quality; mold remediation issues; common indoor pollutants and their health effects; and legislation regulating many of these problems. Learn how changes to the laws and regulations affecting these topics will impact your business.

Construction and Deconstruction: Identifying Oriental Carpets by Weave
Robert Mann, Woven Legends Restoration

Designs might be copied, but carpet structure is the DNA that identifies origin. The ability to recognize a rug by its weave is the foundation of any real knowledge of Oriental carpets and is an invaluable skill to carpet cleaners specializing in this area. Session participants will receive hands-on training and learn how to develop the visual 'language' that differentiates the common types of handmade carpets.
